Visas

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) require all visitors to Australia to hold a valid visa. The following information, from the DIAC website, briefly describes a range of visas which enable holders to work in Australia. The main types of visa category which allow IT professionals to work in Australia are:

  • EMPLOYER SPONSORED WORKERS
  • PROFESSIONALS AND OTHER SKILLED MIGRANTS
  • BUSINESS PEOPLE
  • WORKING HOLIDAY VISAS

EMPLOYER SPONSORED WORKERS
Whereby lawfully operating Australian and overseas employers sponsor and employ skilled workers who have recognised qualifications and skills/or experience in particular occupations required in Australia. For general information, see ‘Employer sponsored workers’.

Temporary Visa Options

Temporary Business Long Stay – Standard Business Sponsorship (subclass 457)
A program for employers to sponsor approved skilled workers to work in Australia on a temporary visa. Employers can nominate a number of positions for different occupations under the same sponsorship application. This is the most commonly used program for employers to sponsor overseas workers to work in Australia on a temporary basis. There are also special arrangements for employers in regional areas across Australia. Valid for from 3 months in duration to 4 years. Must meet minimum salary and skill requirements.

Permanent Visa Options

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 121/856)
For lawfully operating Australian employers to recruit workers on permanent visas, to fill full-time highly skilled positions which cannot be filled from the Australian labour market. For more information, see ‘Employer Nomination Scheme

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 119/857)
The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) is for employers in regional Australia, to fill skilled positions they are unable to fill from the local labour market. For more information, see ‘Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme

PROFESSIONALS AND OTHER SKILLED MIGRANTS
There is a range of visa options under the General Skilled Migration programme for skilled workers who want to live in Australia and who do not have an employer sponsoring them. These include options for skilled people applying as an independent migrant as well as those sponsored by a relative, or nominated by a State or Territory government.

Independent
Independent migrants have the least number of restrictions placed on them and this is the preferred option for eligible applicants who do not have an employer to sponsor them

Sponsored
If you are sponsored by an eligible relative, please note that there are a number of obligations that must be met by your sponsor.

BUSINESS PEOPLE
For business people to visit Australia for business purposes, for example, to attend a conference or training session, to conduct business with an Australia-based organisation, to conduct business negotiations or for an exploratory business visit.

WORKING HOLIDAY VISAS
The Working Holiday and Work and Holiday programmes encourage cultural exchange and closer ties between arrangement countries by allowing young people aged between 18 and 30 to have an extended holiday supplemented by incidental employment.

Working Holiday visa (subclass 417)
For people from Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and United Kingdom.
